A forum for good quality discussion on the business of software.

Ideas and things to avoid in my own business.

New opportunities.

The chance to help others realise their ideas.

Friends, partners and customers in that order.
Hi Neil et al,

Knowledge and experience please! -

The forums strike me as particularly useful. As part of an ISV that's still trying to grow, having the opportunity to post questions in the forum to those of you who have already made it, is absolutely priceless.

Discussions on software pricing, resellers, marketing, partnerships, how to handle the deluge of email when doing a product launch etc are all incredible valuable and the shared knowledge of experienced CEOs really helps.

I agree with Mark to friends, partners and customers! And an occasional get-together for beer and pizza is always welcome :)

I think the most valuable thing is to learn what works and what doesn't, without making costly mistakes. It's a very different kind of role running a software business than being a software developer - there's plenty of software development knowledge already out there, but very little in the way of useful business development know-how, especially in this market.

IMHO, it helps in turbulent times to be able to compare notes with others in the same profession, to get a feel for the market. Or sharing knowledge about problems with issues such as copyright and IPR in certain countries can also be useful.
Hi Neil -

First, thank you for creating this network. I think it has a lot of potential and I look forward to taking advantage of it. I hope to give as mush as I get.

I've had a dream about starting my own software company for a long time. I'm finally getting to a point where I think I want to do it. I have a product that I have already started to develop and it has been run past potential users who have reacted very favorably to it. I see myself starting out as a micro ISV (i.e. keeping my day job as a developer). Right now I don't have plans to "go big", but who knows.

Anyway, would like to have chats and forums with other people who have gone through the same thing or are about to. I have many ideas, but don't want to waste time (or $$$) on ones that don't get me to my goal. I want to know what works and what doesn't, especially from an operations standpoint. (e.g. should I use an accountant or attempt to do that work myself). I think meet-ups would be great if I could find other people in my area (BTW...Can I search membership by location?).

In a nut shell, I would like to use this a forum to bounce ideas off of others who have been there.

Thanks!

Gene
