Using Social Media to create the next generation company

I'm interested in how social media can or will change the way business ideas are created, developed and commercialized. Is it possible that the next generation business will be built with social media applications and through social media networks? I think so, but there needs to be thought behind how to organize a business such that the strengths of social media networks and applications are used to the businesses advantage. Are facebook, linkedin, wikis, squidoos, google apps, ning, xing, salesforce.com pieces that can be used to develop the nextgen company? A nextgen company that uses social media to network people to create knowledge, ideas, awareness, demand, products and profit?

I agree that there's potential here. The question for me is how to extract business value from such a network. I've come across several models:

- Have a subscription charge for membership or offer paid-for premium services

- Have paid-for advertising

- Earn revenue from real-world events connected to the virtual network

Do you know if anyone has catalogued different patterns here? What are your thoughts on extracting business value from the network?
