Any suggestions for automated testing tools for rich media applications using Ajax? I'm looking for something that does not require a programmers background and I'd prefer that it can interface with multiple browsers, but require ie6 at a minimum.

Macro Scheduler should do what you're looking for. And it's non-technical enough that even I can use it!

Hi Steven,

A popular open source tool to do this is called Selenium and it supports a wide variety of browsers and operating systems. We use it internally at Ept Computing to continually test web applications during development and maintenance, and it handles Ajax very well. However, the downside is that making it work on a broad variety of browsers is still quite fiddly and may need bits of programming.

I am actually working at the moment on extending Selenium and making an easy-to-use product out of it, which will allow you to record tests just by clicking, and send them to our service where the tests can be run on many different browsers without you needing to set up anything.

It's still work-in-progress, but if you're interested we can meet up and discuss if we can start you off on a preliminary version of the testing product. I'm very interested in working with some early adopters to make sure we get the product right.

Cheers

Hey Martin,
We are using Selenium and it can be querky. It's still better than other solutions we have tried. I would be very interested in checking out your solution.

Thanks for your feedback Steven, looks like our upcoming product will do just the right things for you. I'll get back to you as soon as we're ready to give you a beta version, and I'll happily give you a hand with setting up the first few tests to get you started. Hope it's not too urgent for you.

(I wanted to send you a direct message, but the reply form didn't work -- looks like Ning needs automated testing too!)

Hi Martin,
We'd be quite keen too. When do you expect your beta to be out?

Cool :) I expect we'll be ready in the next 1-2 months. There are a lot of subtleties in getting it right under the hood, and we want to iron out the essentials first.

Hi! We use Selenium and Fitnesse in our projects too. I'll recommend mjnet to our development team.
